I’m a huge fan of all things retro. It’s very much part of my design aesthetic, particularly when it comes to interiors and environments, but another huge passion (and one that I spend countless hours researching most weekends) is in retro typography and commercial art.
Two amazing projects have caught my eye this weekend. Logan Walter’s “Wu-Note Project” and Steve Thomas’s “Star Wars Travel Posters”.
Logan Walters: The Wu Note Project
To my mind, one of the best graphic artists of all time was Blue Note Records’ legendary Art Director Reid Miles. He designed the bulk of Blue Note’s amazing LP covers, which together constitute an amazing body of work which has a distinct – but timeless – style, use of typography and colour. Click here to view a superb animated video of his classic designs.
Logan Walters, a Detroit-based graphic designer has used Miles’ work to “remix” a brilliant set of cover art for The Wu-Tang Clan (of whom I’m also a huge fan). Check it out here.
Steve Thomas: Star Wars Travel Posters
Having grown up in a house filled with classic travel posters from the 1900′s – 1920′s (click here for some examples), stumbling across Steve Thomas’s interpretation of some of the fictional Star Wars places/planets was an absolute joy. That, and the fact that I am myself a movie uber-geek, and the hubby is what is politely now called a Fanboy. Particularly when it comes to George Lucas. To the point where we actually have a life-size Yoda backpack bought at Sydney’s version of Comic-Con, Supanova. We’re talking nerdcore here, friends.
But enough of my gabbin’. Enjoy this brilliant set of images. Witty, pleasing and a must for any self-respecting pop culture fanatic. Click here.
